RE: seriously?

How do you propose to find out if someone wants to be hit on? Does an attractive woman walking down the street have the right to spray mace on a construction worker who gives her unwelcome cat-calls? Of course not. That's no excuse for violence. Common sense would be to act like an adult or not hang out in the middle of a "gay neighborhood" if you are really that afraid to be seen as attractive by a member of the same gender. |

| Anyone who hangs out on the hill would know that Capitol Hill is not exclusively gay, and is overrun with silly youth of all sexuality. I would hardly call it a gay neighborhood anymore. | |

Here's a hint. If you attack someone because of something he said to you, you are instantly in the wrong, with no exceptions. As mentioned earlier, women are hit on all the time, yet they somehow manage to show enough restraint to not assault the person who complimented them. I honestly hope you weren't implying that 'hey cutie' is justification for assault. |

RE: seriously?

| Really? REALLY? Tell me something, if it were two women who said "Hey cutie" to the two skateboarders, would they still deserve a beat down? And since when was "Hey cutie" equal to whipping it out in public? I think you need to rethink your handle "commonsense". This was obviously a gay bashing. | |

| That's called victim blaming. There's a reason it's wrong. Better go back for another helping of common sense there, commonsense, because what you're spouting off right now is nonsense. | |

Well you realize you're comparing mace to words right? Sticks and stones... If in your scenario the girl swore at the person in retaliation no one would really care, because it happens every single day. How do you propose to find out if someone wants to be hit on? How about using a far less trashy method rather than "hey cutie"? Hope this helps in your future endeavors... |

| I know someone who witnessed this crime and saw that one of the victims was bleeding from the head. I'm sure all of us harmless LGBTQ girls/guys could benefit from carrying mace to protect ourselves from all the chauvinistic, homophobic, egotistical, self-entitled men out there..I'm sure you view these skateboarders as the real victim don't you commonsense. Yes, we must protect the priviledged hetero males in this society! Poor things! Someone actually found one of them to be attractive. Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose. | |

|
| This is rather unfortunate. The fear and ignorance that comes from people is astounding. I feel sorry for both parties. These kids where probably just stupid young kids who happened to have skateboards. I have been skating for 10 years and have never met a real skateboarder who actually thinks or would even act like that. please dont assume the majority of skateboarders are like that. Was anyone able to see how old these kids were? | |

i've had "f-ing fag" shouted at me merely for holding a guy's hand... on Pine... just past Neighbours... are the young straight guys coming to the hill really that unaware that this is the destination neighborhood for gay nightlife in Seattle? what really disappoints me is i've walked through some of the more ghetto parts of San Francisco holding a guy's hand and nobody seemed to even care. for a city with this large a gay population why is there still so much homophobia? i don't get it. |

I'm a pflagger, ... but that said: Maybe the lack of out&proud gay shops like Pink Zone/OutOfTheCloset AND not having the Pride Parade on the hill is perhaps diluting the "Capitol Hill is the gayest gay in gayville" message???? Queer patrol? ANY presence whatsoever other than windowless bars???? Capitol Hill has somehow backed its tender ass back into the closet and entitlement-genereation indignation like yours pisses off those who worked hard for so many years to keep the neighborhood safe & gay-friendly & out and proud. In other words, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE HILL'S BRANDING. |

| Maybe homosexist, but I don't think homophobia is truly the case unless the straight man is actually afraid; like running away, screaming in fear. | |

Homosexist? Don't flatter yourself - that's an awfully BIG word for you to use. Obviously, you think that someone who is 'hydrophobic' runs away screaming from the Atlantic Ocean, right? Seriously, learn the meaning of a word before commenting on it, mmmmmkay? Thanks - hugs & kisses xxxxooooo |

Live with the Consequences
|
|
|
The two guys knew the possible outcomes of hitting on guys in public on Cap Hill. I'm not saying what the skateboarders did was right, far from it. However, people need to hold the 2 fellas accountable for their actions. What if 2 guys were hitting on 2 girls in same situation, and 2 girls had two boyfriends who proceeded to beat up the two cat-callers? Justified? No. Understandable? Yes. Capitol Hill is not a gay wonderland. Basic social norms (regardless of sexual orientation) dictate (or should dictate) appropriate behavior. Its the same anywhere else in Seattle, or the world for that matter. Myself, I am gay and do not feel that a grave injustice was done on to these boys. Keep it civil, keep it safe. |

RE: Live with the Consequences

Actually, an "appropriate" response from the straight boys might have been: "Thanks, my harem of sexy girlfriends thinks so too, twink" ...NOT anyone beating up anyone. Ever. You would be mistaking how 4 year olds might settle their issues. Gender and sexuality aside, grown-ups (with brains) know better. |

Understandable? Absolutely not! It's attitudes like yours that fuel homophobia and hate crimes. You say "Basic social norms (regardless of sexual orientation) dictate (or should dictate) appropriate behavior." Well, I turn your statement right around and apply it to you. In that situation, the guy who got hit on should have been polite and said something like "No thanks, I'm not gay." THAT's appropriate pilote behaviour, especially when HE should be aware that he's in a neighbourhood frequented by gays. You're victim blaming, just like (no)commonsense did above. Blame the guilty, not the innocent. |

That is called drunk & stupid. No they did not deserve to be harmed, still, drunk & stupid is, as drunk & stupid does. I've lived on The Hill for the better part of 20 years, the gayborhood changed along time ago. Be smart and be aware. |

I'd support a woman hitting a guy when the attention is clearly not wanted... I'm tired of the flaming homosexuals giving unnecessary flirting with clearly straight guys over Capitol Hill. Keep it in your fucking pants. |

| Good, 'cause there's an awful lot of that happening, and I have seriously considered getting a taser so I can take down the next preppy guy in a baseball hat who hits on me. Those are the ones I really dislike. Oh, and the guy who always always tells me I look like his ex-wife, with whom he's still in love. He's going down, too. | |

gay bashings
|
|

Three years ago I was attacked just a few blocks away from where this story took place while I was leaving a restaurant (Pine and Belmont). In my case the attackers felt that my friend and I appeared "too gay" and warranted nothing more than to be killed. I escaped with a bent up nose and two nice black eyes, my friend however was stabbed three times and bore the brunt of the attack. Ironically he is as straight as they come, bad jeans and all. No one helped us while it was happening and I won't even go into the way the police handled the situation. Whoever thinks of Seattle as a safe haven for GLBT people is a fool. All either of us did was walk out of the wrong restaurant at the wrong time. So when people start talking about gay people "keeping it in their pants" and obeying social norms, I am immediately reminded of that night and the hatred in those eyes. As long as the United States remains an intolerant religious culture people are going to get attacked and some of them are going to die. Capitol Hill has been a less safe and less safe area for GLBT people for a long time. No ghetto can keep hateful straight people out, not even in Seattle. It's time that GLBT people start taking self defense classes and proactively defending their neighborhoods so that when their turn comes to be bashed (and it will) they'll be ready to win. It's a sad reality, but it's truth. So the next time you're walking home with your friends and a straight person decides you looked at them wrong or you walked on the straight side of the street or they didn't like the tone of your voice or maybe the way you hold your boyfriends hand, you'll be ready to take them on with a big gay Krav Maga smile. |

the bars in capitol hill only care about money not gays. why do bashings occur? these gay bars are full of straight women who are amused by queers. these women tease the straight men who follow these women into the gay bars and challenge these straight men to have sex with a gay guy and falsey state gay men are looking at these straight guys resulting in gay bashings but if the cops are even called, you can bet your queer ass these women are going to side with their straight male admirers and say the queer got agressive and that the bashing was done in self defense. some of these straights go to crowded gay bars with mixed crowds simply to set gay guys up for bashings as a thrill crime. straight women have bars all over puget sound to go to but they want to go to gay bars and be entertained by both gays and their volitile straight boyfriends/male admirers resulting in gay bashings and de-gaying a neighborhood. these women are not accepting gay men by hanging out in gay bars. at best, it is an insult to gay mem to be used a a tool to tease straight men. bars trying to get straights and gays into the same places are trying to get every bit of money they can. avoid these places. most gay men who are brutally bashed are bashed outside or near these notorious gay/dance bars that have straights going to them. the bar owners can say they support gays but when people are bashed and the owners do nothing to help identify the bashers it proves they only care about money. only go to places that respect you. these places don't. |
