Punched in the Face on the 358

I love the northbound 358. The third-busiest Metro bus route, it's fast, it comes often and something exciting nearly always happens during the ride. On one trip just last week I saw three people get arrested in two completely unrelated incidents (two were too drunk, one tried to get off without paying and transit cops chased him down). But one passenger's trip during the afternoon on May 3 got a little too exciting when a roudy woman, part of a group witnesses said were loud and intoxicated, punched him in the face.

Witnesses said a group of four intoxicated people waiting for the northbound 358 at 46th and Aurora were being loud and obnoxious, according to the police report. When the bus arrived, an unknown male who was with the group at the time fell in the aisle, and the bottle of wine on his person broke and spilled on a passenger. The four of them continued to be rude, upsetting and intimidating other passengers.

One guy asked them to behave themselves, and the suspect flipped out and pushed him into his seat. When the victim attempted to stand up, the suspect punched him in the face several times, causing a laceration above his left eye that started bleeding profusely.

The bus driver stopped the bus at N 72nd St and Linden Ave N at the northwest end of Green Lake and the assailant and her friends fled. The victim at first denied medical treatment and hopped in the car with an officer to try to find the suspect.

Witnesses who saw the assault and had switched to a different 358 bus saw the suspect and friends (this time apparently without the wine-covered male) get onto their bus near N 74th and Aurora. The witnesses alerted the bus driver, who called 911. The officer, with the suspect in the car, arrived at N 90th and Aurora just as the suspect and friends were exiting the bus.

The victim identified the suspect and that officer placed her under arrest. She said she was acting in self defense, and when she saw the cut on his face, she said something like, "God I did that?" according to the report. She then said the victim had called her a bitch and cocked his fists as if to hit her. The report says that every witness refuted her account.

She is being investigated for assault, and she and her two friends are being investigated for disorderly conduct.

This was 4:45 p.m. on a Monday.

358
The 358 used to be the 6 which is the route that went off the Aurora Bridge. This route get so much trash that have nothing better to do than ride the bus and stir up trouble. Metro should have a cop on each run!

RE: 358
Hey, I remember that route! I rode it only once in my life, to a house party about 18 years ago, during which 4 thugs sat behind us making obscene gestures to my girlfriend, and apparently not satisfied with our lack of reaction, one one of them spat on me as he got off. Classy!

All these years later, and I guess not much has changed.

This really didn't need to happen, did it?
I'm REALLY confused here.

AFTER THIS HAPPENED:
"an unknown male who was with the group at the time fell in the aisle, and the bottle of wine on his person broke and spilled on a passenger."

WHY DID THIS OR ANYTHING ELSE HAPPEN?
"The four of them continued to be rude, upsetting and intimidating other passengers."

IN OTHER WORDS, once the wine broke on a passenger, shouldn't the bus have been immediately stopped and the "passengers" removed from the bus? The 358 takes at least 10-15 mins to get from 46th to 72nd (where this all ended) so I don't get it... am I missing something? And in general, why were they let on the bus in the first place if they were being unruly?

Meth I hear you calling (sung to the tune of 'Beth' by Kiss)
Last night I was riding with my girlfriend back to our neighborhood on the 358. We saw this chick with bruises and scabs all over her arms, and a semi-bloody bandage wrapped around her left bicep board the bus. She was sticking her hand into a clear plastic bowl/cup and eating what looked like a strawberry shortcake with whipped cream. When it was time to get off, she got up and grabbed the pole leaving a whipcreamy residue as she got off the same bus stop that me and the girlfriend did.

She was on the opposite side of the street, swaying with her thumb out hitchhiker style to the passing cars heading her way. Then erupted from her gut an impressive belch.

Life is beautiful.

route #6
I remember that route the best episode was when some gang bangers lifted a trany up out of her or his seat by there neck. And socked her and threw him her into the window. Would of been a perfect Hollywood clip. The victim got off the bus and flipped them off. And for all you grammer Nazi find something better to do.

Metro (and Seattle) are a Waste
Well, at least one person has questioned why the driver just kept on driving. Transit police? I've never seen one. The drivers on this line are also the worst, although Metro in general doesn't seem to feel that public safety is something to endorse. The dogs crammed onto the 358 get better treatment than the paying human passengers.

RE: Metro (and Seattle) are a Waste
Hey, how are you going to knock the drivers? In my experience, the 358 drivers are really great. And they have a really hard job to do.

Also, the driver did stop once the group changed from rude to violent, and the attacker and friends were able to exit before more violence occurred.

They are bus drivers, not babysitters. Would you rather they stopped the bus and kicked off every loud person who got on? Let's be honest, no bus would ever get anywhere with that kind of policy.

RE: Metro (and Seattle) are a Waste
Try a little empathy. Personally, if I were in the bus drivers shoes, I would be intimidated by having to deal with some of the savage creeps that ride the buses (especially the special brand of scum that rides the 358). It's a dangerous line of work, having to deal with so many people. My sincere respect goes out to all of the brave metro drivers out there.

Pin the blame where it belongs. The riders:

Fare evasion, 358 storys ect..
I know quite a few people who have gotten arrested for fare evasion on the bus. 2 people I was friends with growing up got detained in Shoreline on the 358. I was questioned one time on Cap hill when I was 17 after I put in my 50 cents by a driver about my age. After showing him my id he let me go. So it does happen. Just not as often as it should. KUOW did a story a few weeks back about that. If I recall correctly they said they lose over 2,000$ a week because of that.

And now for my 358 Story. I was 17 riding downtown from Shoreline to my job. Talk about a long ride! I would try to find a place to sit near the front of the bus to avoid the crazys, but that day no seats were open till almost the back door. I sat down right behind the back door. The next stop a young african american kid about my age came and sat next to me. I smiled and took off my head phones to say hello. We started chitchating. He was also going to work. We talked about music and school. As we were going over the bridge an cracky looking older man who was sitting across the ile from us tapped him on the shoulder. "hey you or your lady smoke?" and then handed him a big yellow rock of crack. The young man handed it back to him and told him no sorry. We both got off the bus a short time later to wait for the next one because we both were no longer feeling comfortable. So what I took away from that bus ride: 1. DONT SIT IN THE BACK OF THE 358!!! 2. Find a Buddy if you don't have one with you already. 3. You can buy crack on the 358.
