County Working to Expand Juvenile Jail

What’s going on with King County’s crusty, broken down juvenile jail? Centraldistrictnews has an update:

The county has developed a new master plan for the 8.5 acre site that includes six different options for replacing current courtroom capacity and adding additional capacity to handle growth over the next 20 years. Two things remain the same in all six options:

  • The newer detention facility building that runs the length of Spruce street would be kept, as it’s in good shape
  • The 1950’s era “Alder Wing” detention building along 14th Avenue would be demolished
  • The “Alder Tower” that contains courtrooms and office space would be demolished and rebuilt
  • Parking for the facility will be put in a new 3-story garage
