Police ended up in a chase with a car prowler in the Greenlake neighborhood last Friday after a man reportedly broke into a number of cars and rammed a motorist who attempted to end his spree.
At about 2:00 p.m. on Friday, a woman grabbing coffee near Greenlake saw a teal Honda Civic pull up alongside a Prius parked in the 7700 block of Woodlawn Avenue. A man got out of the Toyota and busted out a window, before he reached in a took a bag out of the back seat, a police report says. Then he got back in his car and tried to flee. A motorist, who also witnessed the car prowl and tried to cut the Honda off, but the car prowler rammed the motorist’s vehicle and sped away.
Police arrived at the scene and were approached by another man who said he’d had his car broken in to earlier, and had someone connected the incident to the same Honda. The man told police he followed the Honda into the underground parking lot of Whole Foods at 65th and Roosevelt, where he watched the car prowler look into a number of other vehicles in the parking lot, and eventually broke into a VW Golf.
As officers were talking to witnesses at 77th and Woodlawn, police received additional reports about a man in a Honda breaking in to cars. Officers on patrol spotted the vehicle and attempted to pull it over, but the prowler fled from officers and police called off the chase. “The Honda was driving in a reckless manner to avoid being stopped,” the report says.
It appears police have the license plate of the Honda, but the report does not indicate any arrests were made.
