“Stories of Blind Cock That Still Win At the Pit Is Not Unusual In Vietnam.”

Prosecutors have filed animal cruelty charges against a South Seattle man accused of importing at least 11 chickens from Minnesota for the purposes of cockfighting.

As we first reported in April, police and animal control officers were called to a South Seattle home near Martin Luther King Jr Way S and S Kenyon Street in December after a neighbor reported seeing injured fowl being kept in cages behind a home.

At the home, a woman told police—through a translator—that the 20-30 chickens, ducks, and doves kept behind the house belonged to her husband and father.

Police searched the property and found a dead chicken and an njured chicken [gross pictures here,] which appeared to have  sustained injuries from cockfighting.

When officers contacted the woman’s husband, 26-year-old Hoa Kien Phan, about the birds, court records say he “denied owning the chickens for the purposed of fighting” but admitted he had altered the birds. However, court documents say the modifications to the birds—such as trimming their combs, wattles, and spurs—are typically found in fowl used for fighting.

Police searched the home and Phan’s vehicle, and found records indicating he had spent $1,650 for 11 chickens and paid hundreds of dollars” to have them shipped from Minnesota. It appears police doubted Phan’s claims the chickens “were just to be used as pets,” as, court records say, “local chickens can be purchased for just a few dollars each.”

Phan later told police he’d purchased the birds off of a website, which appears to promote cockfighting.

One post on the site—which is listed in court records—proudly touts the record of one rooster, known as “12x Blind Warrior:

“this cock won 8 times then lost an eye. It continued to win 2 more but lost andother eye on the 10. After it lost both eyes, it went on to win 2 more small matches for a total of 12 win. Stories of blind cock that still win at the pit is not unusual in Vietnam”

Although Phan has been charged with “animal fighting,” jail records appear to indicate he is not being held in jail.
