Armed Robber Eludes Police At Aurora Motel

A Seattle police SWAT team raided a hotel on Aurora Avenue in the Northgate area searching for an armed robber who struck a nearby Money Tree store.

Police said the armed man robbed the store while holding employees at gunpoint at 4:30 p.m. Monday. An officer who heard about the robbery during roll call at the start of his shift said he recognized the description of the robber and his pickup truck. He said he had talked to the man several days ago.

That officer spotted the man’s truck in the hotel garage around 9 p.m. and SWAT officers were called to the Comfort Inn at North 137th Street and Aurora Avenue North.

When police kicked down the man’s door this morning, he was already gone.

On July 19th at approximately 4:30p.m., a W/M suspect armed with a handgun entered a business in the 500 block of NE Northgate Way. The suspect grabbed the cash and fled the scene. The suspect was further described as wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap over a blond wig.

A witness observed a similarly described W/M carrying an envelope running in an alley behind the business. The subject got into an old dirty white P/U with a blue stripe and a blue tarp in the bed.  Numerous units responded to the scene, but the suspect or vehicle could not be located. The Robbery Unit and Latent Prints responded to process the scene.

A few hours later, a North Precinct Officer contacted the case detective with information on a possible suspect.   During an area check for the suspect, the officer located the suspect’s vehicle parked and unoccupied at a motel in the 13700 block of Avenue N.

North Precinct Anti Crime Team, Robbery & Patrol set up containment and SWAT & HNT were requested.  Several attempts were made to contact the occupants of the room, but there was no response. A search and arrest warrant was obtained and SWAT eventually made entry into the room, which was empty. The suspect vehicle was impounded
