Police Suspect Gang Involvement In South Lake Union Homicide

Police suspect a gang dispute lead to a fatal shooting at a South Lake Union park early Saturday morning, sources tell Seattlecrime.com.

Around midnight, police received reports of gunfire near a Seattle Parks Department facility at Terry Ave and Valley St, but when police drove through the area, they didn’t find anything suspicious.

Three hours later, police received another report that a badly beaten and unconscious man had been found by several people attending a party in Lake Union Park, just west of an old Navy armory building on the property. Medics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police sources tell us the victim had had attended a Quincinera party—a Latin American celebration of a girl’s 15th birthday—earlier in evening at the armory, and had gotten into a dispute with several gang members.

The victim, who was apparently also in a gang, flashed a gang sign at several Vatos Locos gang members, who took offense.

One of the Vatos Locos gang members pulled a gun on the victim before the group of men got into a brawl.

It’s still not clear if the victim was shot or died from injuries sustained in a fight.

We’ll have more information on this case as it develops.
