The bad news: the Department of Labor and Industries just slapped Harborview hospital with a $13,000 fine for worker safety/security issues.
The good news: if you get stabbed, shot, or attacked by a pack of badgers at HMC, they can totally fix you right up.
From the PI.com:
The state has fined Harborview Medical Center more than $13,000 for serious worker safety violations, saying the hospital has left its security guards ill-equipped to deal with dangers ranging from violent citizens to explosives.
The $13,200 fine was levied earlier this month by the Department of Labor and Industries. It comes after guards have complained about their safety and that of the public they are supposed to protect.
In 2007, guards passed out leaflets at the hospital, saying they wanted better training and new tools, such as pepper spray and stun guns, to deal with dangerous situations.
But the hospital said at the time that Harborview was safe and that the guards’ claims were an exaggeration.
On Tuesday, the hospital said it believed the Department of Labor and Industries was wrong and said it would appeal the citations.
“Harborview Medical Center places the safety of our patients and staff as the highest priority and commits extensive resources to maintain high standards of safety at all times,” the hospital’s statement said.
Fun fact: the cops coloquially refer to Harborview as The Zoo.
