Prosecutors Charge Man For Waterfront Sculpture Park Kidnapping Attempt

King County Prosecutors have filed kidnapping charges against a 27-year-old man arrested last month after he allegedly tried to wrestle a three-year-old boy out of his mother’s arms at a downtown park.

According to charging documents, witnesses saw Dawnuell Kindall Kelly “talking to himself and yelling at the helicopters flying overhead” moments before he approached the three-year-old boy and his mother inside the Olympic Sculpture Park on Seattle’s waterfront on November 16th.

Kelly allegedly walked up to the woman—who was carrying her son—grabbed the boy’s leg, and told the woman “he’s my son!”

The woman clung to her child as Kelly tried to pull him from her grasp.

When a friend of the boy’s mother began shouting for help, Kelly said “Oh…he’s not my son” and ran off, according to police records.

Officers stopped Kelly near Denny Way and Elliot Avenue and arrested him.

According to court records, Kelly’s defense attorneys have raised questions about his competency to stand trial.

Kelly is currently being held in the King County Jail on $250,000 bail
