The driver of an SUV almost mowed down an officer and then led police on a chase after gunfire erupted after closing time in Belltown last weekend.
Officers on patrol near Western Ave and Blanchard St spotted several people fighting in the middle of the intersection just after closing time on November 27th.
According to a report for the incident, fights frequently “erupt” at Western and Blanchard on the weekends, due “to highly intoxicated patrons leaving the bars and pouring out into the street.”
As officers moved in to break up the brawl, they heard several gunshots coming from an SUV in a nearby parking lot.
Officers ordered the five people out of the car at gunpoint, but the driver refused to listen to police and “accelerated forward” towards an officer, who had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit, according to the report.
The driver then sped out of the parking lot and up Western Ave onto the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
Police followed the vehicle up Aurora and pulled the car over just north of McGraw St.
Officers got the five occupants out of the car at gunpoint, and found a spent shell casing in the vehicle, but no handgun.
Police backtracked the route the SUV driver had taken, and found a Ruger 9mm handgun and a magazine near Aurora and Harrison. The bullets in the gun matched the shell casing found in the car, according to the report.
Police found that one of the car’s occupants is convicted felon, and located 1.5 grams of ecstasy.
Police booked one person into the King County Jail for drug possession, and released the other four occupants from the scene.
It’s not clear whether police arrested the driver or one of the passengers in the car, but we’ll find out and post an update later today.
