A homeless man has been charged with stealing goods from a local church. Police say his alleged accomplice claimed one of the victims was a racist as a cover story.
The incident happened Sunday afternoon at Luther Memorial Church at 13047 Greenwood Ave. N. A woman working there heard voices talking about something in the building and closed herself in a church office when she heard people in the church foyer.
The woman called her husband, who came to the church and asked the intruders — a man and woman — how it was going. Luther Memorial Church feeds about 15 people daily during lunch.
“The female engaged him in conversation about being native and asked (the) witness if he was native,” Seattle Police Detective Bruce Larsen wrote in a probable cause document.
As they were talking, police say Stephen Dale O’Daye walked out of a nearby door with something under his jacket. The husband reported a cord was hanging from his jacket.
“Dude … what’s under your jacket?” the husband asked.
