A man chased two pickpockets around downtown and threatened them with pepper spray after they grabbed his wallet and checkbook last week.
Around 2:40 p.m. on June 15th, the victim was walking down 3rd Ave near Pike St when he felt someone reaching into his back pocket, grabbing his wallet and checkbook.
The victim turned around and confronted the suspect, and was able to wrestle the checkbook away from him.
The suspect tried to run away, and victim chased him around a parked car until a second suspect appeared and swung a red backpack at the victim, striking him in the chest.
The victim then pulled a can of pepper spray out of his pocket, but didn’t spray the suspects because he was worried about hitting bystanders.
The suspects ran off southbound on 3rd, and the victim called police.
Shortly after officers took the man’s statement and left the scene, the victim flagged down another officer and said he’d found his wallet on the sidewalk two blocks away from where it was taken.
The suspects only took $15 in cash.
