And a Bloody New Year

Today in Fuzz: Two men wounded by gunfire on New Year’s Eve, gunfire in Seattle (and the Central District), burglars arrested at West Seattle school, and a carjacking.

1) 2011 ended on a bloody note after two men were shot near the Paramount Theater on New Year’s Eve. Police say two groups of men got into a fight at 8th Ave. and Pine St. around 8:40 pm, which led to an apparent exchange of gunfire.

Two men, 24 and 18, were seriously wounded in the shooting.

Following the shooting, police arrested a 23-year-old gunman after he fled to a parking garage on Capitol Hill, and found a handgun in a dumpster. Police also believe the 24-year-old man wounded at 8th and Pine fired shots during the incident.

Gang detectives are investigating the case.

2) Police didn’t have to wait long to begin investigating the first shooting of 2012, after someone opened fire on a house on 54th Ave. S. and S. Grattan in South Seattle around 11 am January 1, according to SPD.

Police say the shooter fired shots on a second home at 45th Ave. S. and S. Holden minutes later. Nobody was injured.

Police say the shootings are not random, and that the suspect knows the victims.

3) Officers found two burglars hiding on the roof of Sanislo Elementary School in West Seattle around 3 pm New Year’s Day

Police had to use a fire department ladder to get onto the roof of the school, where they arrested a 27-year-old man and a 19-year-old man, who were carrying “burglary tools,” police say.

4) Just after midnight Tuesday, police say a man was carjacked in South Seattle after he met up with a woman to sell her some DVDs. As the woman was getting out of the car near 46th Ave. S. and S. Othello St , another man jumped into the passenger seat, demanded money and attacked the driver.

When the driver bailed out of the car, the suspect hopped in the driver’s seat and sped off.

5) Police are investigating a drive-by shooting after a green early 90s Chevy Suburban pulled up next to a man driving down 23rd Ave. And E. Jefferson St. and opened fire around 2:45 this morning.

The man targeted in the shooting was not injured. Police found a bullet hole in his front passenger-side door.

The victim apparently recognized the gunman and gave officers information about the man.
