Officer Arrested In SPD Drug Sting Shoots Himself

The Seattle police officer arrested in an SPD drug sting last night shot himself hours after he was released from the King County Jail this morning, a department source tells PubliCola.

A King County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman confirms a jogger found a man with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound on a trail near Rattlesnake Lake around 11 am this morning. A source says the man was 50-year-old Seattle police officer Richard Nelson. Nelson is now in critical condition at Harborview.

Nelson was arrested by police late last night as part of an internal investigation into whether Nelson was using drugs. Police busted Nelson with crack cocaine last night, according to a source.

SPD Chief John Diaz had scheduled a press conference earlier today to discuss Nelson’s arrest, which the department abruptly cancelled moments before it was supposed to begin.
