The veteran Seattle police officer arrested in an SPD drug sting has died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officer Richard Nelson was arrested last night following an internal investigation, which began after another officer raised concerns that Nelson was using drugs, according to a law enforcement source.
After police found crack cocaine on Nelson when they arrested him last night, he was briefly booked into jail before another member of the department took him home, a second source said.
A woman found Nelson on a trail near North Bend around 11 this morning. He had sustained an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the King County Sheriff’s Office.
Nelson died from his wounds at Harborview this afternoon.
Several assistant police chiefs visited the South Precinct this afternoon to brief officers on Nelson’s arrest and notify them of his death.
A source present at the briefing said officers at the South Precinct are stunned. “Emotions are raw,” the source said. “We didn’t see this coming.”
